Description
CNC Friction Stir Welding Machining Center
The DRD FSW 12-06 is a compact CNC machine designed for Friction Stir Welding (FSW), engineered to provide high precision, structural rigidity, and excellent process control for medium-small components.
The machine is intended for industrial applications where consistent weld quality, process repeatability, and easy integration into production environments are required.
The FSW working area is custom-built according to the customer’s specific requirements, allowing the axis travels, table dimensions, and machine configuration to be adapted to different Friction Stir Welding applications. This approach makes the DRD FSW 12-06 a flexible and configurable solution rather than a standardized machine.
The structure features a compact enclosed design with a fully protected cabin, developed to ensure operational safety, acoustic containment, and protection of the working area.
The vertical-column architecture allows a rational axis layout and excellent accessibility to the working table, improving ergonomics and ease of workpiece loading.
The Friction Stir Welding process is carried out through a spindle specifically designed and sized according to the materials to be welded.
FSW technology enables the welding of various materials, including aluminum, copper, and steel; depending on the material type, thickness, and required performance, the spindle, axial force, and machine kinematics are properly dimensioned.
The configuration shown is dedicated to welding AA6000 series aluminum alloys up to 10 mm thickness, achieving welding speeds higher than traditional MIG and TIG methods.
The main advantages of the FSW process include:
- superior weld joint quality,
- lower heat input,
- reduced deformation,
- increased production efficiency.
The machine is equipped with X and Y axes integrated into the moving working table, ensuring precise workpiece positioning, while the spindle head integrates the Z and C axes, dedicated respectively to tool plunge control and continuous spindle rotation.
This configuration makes it possible to handle complex geometries and articulated welding paths while maintaining high positioning accuracy.
Thanks to its compact dimensions, high structural rigidity, and industrial OSAI OPEN CNC control system, the DRD FSW 12-06 is an ideal solution for automotive, industrial manufacturing, advanced prototyping, and the production of lightweight structural components, especially in production environments with limited space.
